Caught the latest Kevin Smith movie last night: Zack & Miri Make A Porno. A couple of friends said it was great, but I thought it was just okay. There was a lot of funny dialogue and a terrific scene-stealing appearance by Justin Long but apart from that it was still predictable and rote. I was especially right in that Smith would not have a good-enough ending that the previous 85 minutes deserved.
Part of me feels it was coasting along on the charm of its leads, Seth Rogen & Elizabeth Banks. Or that ANYTHING, no matter how ordinary, would look sweet and cute in the context of, say, a porno, or the regular potty-mouth spiels that come out of the mouths of most Kevin Smith characters. In the end, I suspect that its positive feedback from my friends is due to the fact that Smith’s last 4 movies have just been so bad that anything not horrible was given a lot of rope. Clerks is still my favorite film of his.
